This is a Recipe for preparing Gul-Poli. This sweet dish is prepared specially for the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti. Gul Poli, which is prepared using Jaggery and Gram Flour as the main ingredients is very popular in Maharashtra and is an authentic and traditional Maharashtrian specialty sweet dish.
Ingredients
1 Cup Jaggery (should not be of the sticky type)
½ Cup Bengal Gram dal flour (Besan)
1 Cups finely sieved wheat flour or Maida
1 Tea spoon Poppy seeds (khus-Khus)
1 Tea spoon sesame seeds (til)
½ Tea spoon cardamom powder
1 Table spoon Oil
Pinch of Salt, little milk, little Ghee for frying.
Preparation
Roast the gram dal flour to a pale brown colour, Roast poppy seeds and sesame seeds.
Mix Jaggery, roasted flour, Poppy seeds and sesame seeds Add cardamom powder. Use little Milk while mixing. Make into 10 to 12 small balls.
Add salt and oil to wheat flour. Add sufficient water and knead. Make pliable dough. Divide the dough into small balls made out of jaggery. Rolls out each ball of Dough into small round puri, flatten the Jaggery ball to the size of the puri. Put the flattened jaggery ball in between two puries; bring the sides of the puries together so as to enclose the filling.
Roll on a board. Fry on a flat griddle (tava) by putting a little ghee around the poli. Fry on both sides, Serve hot.
